Youth day reminds me a lot about being asked what I wanted to be when I grow up. Naturally, the answer, whether originating from me or having being suggested by those around me, would be to be a doctor, sometimes a lawyer or a pilot.
Fast forward decades later, not any of the above – through exposure to different career paths and opportunities, things are different.
The repetitive questioning and influencing about the future led to me being so future orientated. Some of the common questions that ran through my mind, “Will I be a …..?” “Am I doing what I will be…?”
When we become too future orientated, we can miss some of the fun in the present moment. Our thoughts and actions can be so engrossed with the future that we forget to enjoy the present. We can either become too cautious or too careless – based on the big picture goal that we want to achieve.
While achieving the big picture goal is wonderful, it sometimes does not bring the excitement and joy initially anticipated. Sometimes, we may have the “Is that it?” moment.
The missing puzzle lies in being fully present and enjoying the process of getting to the big picture target. Celebrating the achievement of each stage of the process brings about the joy of being in a constant celebratory state and also being in a more innovative state – and when one ultimately achieves the big picture target, the celebration can even be grander.
A lot of lessons, positives and negatives, are learnt during the process and that is when true growth actually takes place.
So, I’d say, by all means think big, but be passionate about the small steps in the process that take you to the ultimate big picture target and maybe your ultimate goal should be to have daily micro celebrations of lessons learnt during the process.
